The country has posted $15.1 million from the sale of 8.9 million kilogrammes (kg) of all types of tobacco within the first two weeks of sales.
According to figures from the AHL Group, this represents a 69.6 percent increase when compared to the $8.9 million the country realised during the same period last year after selling 5.6 million kg of the crop. While the Tobacco Commission Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chidanti Malunga noted that there is a high rejection rate, the green gold is selling at $1.68 from $1.55 last year.
On the other hand, President Lazarus Chakwera presented a plan that would see Malawi relying less on Tobacco and more on its minerals, as the sector has reported rampant illegal mining.
