Last year in November, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Rejoice Shumba, confirmed that the South African Government has deported 150 Malawians who were living in that country without proper documentation as 350 more Malawians are expected to arrive in the country from Lindela Holding Facility in the Rainbow Nation. Today, 250 Malawians are expected to arrive home as the second phase of the deportation.
In September last year, Malawians, Zimbabweans and Nigerians suffered xenophobic attacks by South Africa nationals who blamed foreigners for taking up jobs meant for locals as well as selling illegal substance such as drugs.
In response, the South African government patrolled the streets, checking identification and documentation of pedestrians; foreigners with no valid documentation were detained.
