The Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) has outlined that the implementation of a minimum wage to K50,000 at a time employers are struggling from the impact of Covid-19, may have employers to cut jobs.
Speaking to The Nation newspaper, Ecam executive director George Khaki said that the minimum wage has put more pressure on employers, while the new wave of coronavirus is affecting businesses in general.
On the other hand, a survey the employers’ body conducted last year which showed that the job market was hit hard by the impact of the Covid-19, resulting in 273 712 people losing their jobs in the first half of 2020, with the tourism industry the hardest hit.
