$57m PUMPED IN FOR MOZ/MW ENERGY TRADE – Malawi News Online
World Bank threw in a total of $57 million equivalent for the Mozambique-Malawi Regional Interconnection Project, as revealed by World Bank Country Directors.
This is an important project for the region. It will create conditions to expand access to millions of people in the region living without electricity, and help decarbonize the Southern African power systems which are currently dominated by coal generation” said Debora Wetzel, the World Bank Director for Regional Integration for Africa, the Middle East and Northern Africa.
On the other hand, the Country Director for Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, said project will address Malawi’s sectoral challenges including chronic electricity supply deficits and ensures security of supply.
The development comes amidst a return of blackouts, as the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) reported that 3 of the 4 machines at Kapichira Power Station are out on electrical fault due to the System Disturbance that occurred on Saturday, 7 September, 2019.
According to a notice on the company’s Facebook page, only 32.4 Megawatts available out of the possible 129.6 Megawatts. “Our maintenance team is currently working to bring back the machines online as soon as possible. Currently we are running diesel generators for longer hours to minimize the impact of the forced outage of Kapichira Power Stations. We will keep the public updated on any further developments.”
