The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) impounded 7 vehicles that evaded duty, as MRA head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma confirmed that the vehicles belong to former State Residences director general Peter Mukhitho.

The impounded vehicles are Range Rover and a Toyota Landcruiser VX8 (both unregistered), a Toyota Landcruiser VX8 registration BW 6060, a Mercedes Benz with personalised registration CPM 2, a VW Passat registration CP 7074, a Toyota Fortuner registration MH 960 and a Bentley with South African registration FW16LS-GP. “The amount of duty that is suspected to have not been paid is over K50 million. It can’t be less than that.” said an MRA source that confided in The Nation newspaper.

The incident follows after Norman Chisale was recently arrested  in relation to the importation of K5 billion worth of cement duty free using Mutharika’s Taxpayer Identification Number. According to the police, Mutharika was entitled to importing goods for personal use duty free, but eyebrows were raised when information emerged that 1.2 million 50-kilogramme bags of cement had been imported for such purposes.
