Recently, the Representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) penned the parliament to call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), Reyneck Matemba, to query on various investigations, one of them being the cement purchase saga which may involve former President Arthur Peter Mutharika. In response, Matemba outlined that ACB is conducting a separate investigation into the alleged importation of cement valued at K5 billion using former president Peter Mutharika’s duty-free privilege
“Firstly, our investigation on this particular matter relates to the public officers and secondly, the issues that we are investigating fall under the Corrupt Practices Act.” said Matemba, speaking to The Nation newspaper, as he outlined that he could not divulge more information about these investigative issues for fear of jeopardising the ongoing investigations.
Among other investigations that the CSOs have resounded the query on the procurement contract for ambulances at the Ministry of Health (MoH), advertised in local newspapers on February 3 and closed on March 17 this year. The petition was received by Legal Affairs Committee member Bester Awali, who will deliver it to Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara for the necessary way forward.
