Maize farmers are offering to supply Admarc with about 275% more than what the state grain trader is prepared to buy this year.
Admarc has resources only to buy 80,000 metric tonnes against the 300,000 metric tons that farmers are ready to sell off, as Admarc Acting Chief Executive Officer, Felix Jumbe, outlined that the parastatal will ration buying of the commodity.
Admarc secured K22.2 billion to buy maize from small scale farmers and asked them how much maize they have. Meanwhile, as Admarc is overwhelmed by the supply, the farmers will have unsold maize which may be taken advantage of by unscrupulous vendors who buy below recommended gate prices. Farmers have also called for the establishment of stable markets for other commodities which are also suffering due to the incapability of Admarc.
