Before re-opening the mine in two years, Kayelekera’s new operator, Hyle Metals, will conduct a fresh feasibility study to re-engineer mine processes.
Deputy Director of Mines, Peter Chilumanga, told The Daily Times that production will not commence immediately because the new company will have to take due diligence of the current Kayerekera standing position.
Recently, stakeholders argued that Government has not been keen on transparency, in regards to the Kayelekera Mine Sale. According to Tonse Tipindule Program Manager, Paul Mvula, there are information gaps on the deal, which need to be explained.
Mvula stated that government keeps fuelling speculations and suspicions and keeping information under wraps. “Leaving just two ministers [of natural resources and finance] to decide on behalf of all Malawians is not a good idea” said Mvula.
