During a graduation ceremony of over 200 bankers who graduated with certificates and diplomas in Blantyre, University of Malawi Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Al Mtenje called on commercial banks to hire only qualified staff.
The Professor stressed that the banking sector plays a very important role in the economy and the national economy, hence only qualified individuals must work in the sector. “The graduates we have produced today are appropriate for that task as they will be working in areas of management, marketing, finance and different areas of the banking sector,” Mtenje said.
Mtenje’s words follow a report in April, from the Reserve Bank of Malawi that showed that complaints of poor customer services have continued to top the list, out of other complaints that are addressed to the central Bank. The report specified that the complaints are towards microfinance institutions, insurance sectors and the banking sector. In 2018 microfinance institutions registered 97 complaints, insurance firms 91 and bank sector registered 59.
