According to a notice placed in the newspapers last weekend, the Blantyre City Council (BCC) has banned the sale or offer for sale of ready-to-eat foods such as cooked or roasted fresh maize, mandasi, Cooked cassava, potato, sweet beer (thobwa), sausage, birds and grasshoppers.
The notice, signed by BCC Chief Executive Officer, Dr A.W.D Chanza, says that the ban follows the provisions of Local Government Act and Public Health Act and Blantyre City Bylaws. To enforce the ban, the Council shall confiscate and destroy such foods should any vendor be caught selling or offering the stated foods for sale.
“The Council is appealing to all residents and the general public to observe personal and food hygiene at all times” says the notice.
