Blantyre District Council handed over a K17 million shelter to Chilobwe Market vendors, a development that will see the sellers have a safe space to conduct business on.

Handing over the structure to the vendors, Council chairperson Carol M’dala revealed that the council plans to build three more shelters there, to accommodate more vendors and construct a brick fence around the market. However, she urged the vendors to pay there market fees, so that the council is able to fund such projects.

Chilobwe, a busy area in Blantyre, has businesses set up in random places, hence the establishment of the market promotes cleanliness. However, with the other shelters still in construction, only 40 out of 100 vendors will benefit from the shelter.  Senior Chief Kapeni therefore called on the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development complete the construction of three other shelters, so that more vendors may be located in the market.
