Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre, constructed a path that would lead vehicles into the highway, from/to the hotel. This was considered an accident prone development, as a busy highway would be inconvenienced by the hotels entering/existing customers. Though there was an order to stop construction of the diversion, the hotel is finalizing the construction.
According to Malawi Institution of Engineers (MIE) president Wilson Chirwa, Blantyre City Council is to blame for letting the construction of the diversion to continue. “The idea to open an access [road] into the main highway is a bad one, especially when one looks at the accident record along that stretch. It is a slope and you cannot have vehicles branching off or joining the road. That decision is wrong and should be rescinded.” he told The Nation newspaper. The continuation of the diversion means that the hotel has gone against the town planning committee of Blantyre.
Meanwhile the round about that located between Chichiri Shopping Mall and Kamuzu Stadium has already seen its share of road accidents. Hopefully responsible authorities will ensure that the hotel is accessed from the Blantyre Cultural Centre end of the road.
