Leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG), Shepherd Bushiri, has announced that he will start selling maize in Malawian markets at K5,000 per 50 kilogram (kg) bag from today.
The price, which translates to K100 per kg, follows after the leader was not taken seriously when he approached authorities on the matter of food scarcity in Malawi. He announced that markets will roll out in districts of Ntcheu, Salima, Chikwawa, Karonga, Chitipa and Phalombe then to the rest of the country.
“Because nobody took me seriously, I have decided to take it up alone; I am from tomorrow [today] going to sell maize at the cheapest price ever.” he said.
On the other hand, every buyer of the affordable maize will be required to provide a national identity card to keep away vendors who would plan to buy the commodity and sell it at a higher price. Also, the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) has announced buying 5 000 metric tonnes (MT) of maize from suppliers following the adjustment of the prices from K250 to K310 per kilogramme (kg) which attracted many sellers.
