Castel Malawi has canceled sponsorship for the Carlsberg Cup, as revealed in a letter by the beverage giant’s legal team, to the General Secretary of the Football Association of Malawi, (FAM).
The letter attributes the sponsorship cancellation to financial challenges that Castel Malawi is facing, as recently it was revealed that the firm risks closure due to financial circumstances. “Due to the financial constraints that the company is facing, we have decided to cancel the Carlsberg Cup Sponsorship until further notice” reads the letter.
Castel Malawi, through the Carlsberg brand, has since 2012, partnered with FAM. Football enthusiasts may recall a K250 million sponsorship for the national team in 2014. On the other hand, Carlsberg maintained a K40 million sponsorship for the Carlsberg cup as Castel Malawi’s Managing Director Giles Leclerc affirmed the sponsorship was a celebration for football in Malawi. However, cancellation of the sponsorship does not mean Castel has ceased support for FAM or football altogether, as the letter indicates that Castel will provide further details on the way forward, at a later stage.
