Central Medical Stores Trust has suspended Director of Procurement Rex Kuyeli, as CMST spokesperson Herbert Chandilanga confirmed.

According to the spokesperson, the Procurement Director has been suspended on allegations that he mismanaged 100,000 N95 facemasks. Since Malawi registered the first case of coronavirus in April last year, CMST, received funding from the government for the purchase of personal protective equipment for distribution to public healthcare service providers and other designated institutions.

Last week, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa said expenditure reports for the K6.2 billion Covid-19 response funds show traces of abuse. Briefing journalists at Parliament Building in Lilongwe, Nankhumwa called for a forensic audit to assess the extent of the abuse.
