South African Airways (SAA) has canceled Chileka airport as a route, due to ‘non compliance’ findings by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), which indicate dissatisfaction by Chileka airports standards, which led to SAA’s resolve.
A statement by SACAA says “…notably, the airport’s perimeter fence is vandalized and falls short of the set international standards. Due to lack of maintenance, both the ambulance and fire engine are not dependable.”
The above makes the institution cause the cancellation for the safety of customers. During the official announcement of the cancellation on 19th January 2019, already booked Saturday and Monday flights were affected, in which the customers were given options of refund or using the alternate Lilongwe route.
As the airport has been demanded to comply with international standards, it has been in a revamp process that was announced to end in October 2018, but somehow the deadline was not met, pouring the work into 2019.
