Chileka Airport’s main runway RWY 10/28 was closed on 24 April which affected commercial flights into Blantyre. Currently, flights are only being carried out using small aircraft that use an alternate runway at the airport. However, an undisclosed source told Bizmalawi News (Biznews) that the runway will be reopened in December.
According to the source, only half of the runway will be open, while the rest of the runway is being repaired. “Hopefully the half of the runway will be enough to resume flights for the bigger planes” said the source.
In a statement earlier this year, it was announced that the main runway at Chileka Airport would be ready by 24 July 2019, but the runway is not yet ready as the maintenance project is still being carried out. As fingers remain crossed, the opening of half of the main runway would be good news to travelers, especially during the festive season.
