Malawian Airlines announced the reopening of Boeing operations into Blantyre effective 2nd January, after the main runway is now operational after being shutdown for almost a year.
Since the shutdown, big aircraft were not landing at the airport, with only small and lighter planes carrying passengers between Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and Chileka International Airport. However, Malawi Airlines made efforts to keep normal flights from being disrupted, as the airline deployed more smaller aircraft to ensure normal flights.
The main runway repairs were dated to be completed by July 24 2019 but the deadline was shifted to August, then to November 30 2019. Customers are ensured that flights on the big aircraft have resumed as the runway has been fully repaired.
