Malawi Airlines announced the reopening of Boeing operations into Blantyre effective 2nd January, after the main runway at Chileka International Airport is now operational following close to a year shutdown.
Since the shutdown, big aircrafts were not landing at the airport, with only small and lighter planes carrying passengers between Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and Chileka in Blantyre serving the airport. However, Malawi Airlines made efforts to keep normal flights from being disrupted, as the airline deployed more smaller aircraft to ensure normal operations.
The main runway repairs were scheduled to be completed by July 24 2019 but the deadline was shifted to August, then to November 30 2019 and later December end. Travelers on Malawi Airlines can now smile as flights on the big aircraft have resumed as the runway is fully operational.
