South African Airways has announced that it is working on resuming operations at Chileka Airport after suspending the South Africa to Blantyre route on 18th January.
The resolve comes after SAA put together a Corrective Action Plan and submitted it for consideration by its regulator, South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). SAA spokesperson, Tlali Tlali confirmed the development saying that remedial interventions have been implemented in order to bring Chileka airport back to standard, working together with Malawian authorities, the Malawian Ministry of Transport and the local municipality in Blantyre.
Meanwhile SAA awaits SACAA to inspect Chileka airport to check if required interventions have been implemented successfully. “Until measures put in place meet the satisfaction of SACAA, our operations between Johannesburg and Blantyre will remain suspended,” explained Tlali.
The inspection is expected to happen on Wednesday, the 30th of January and operations are expected to resume on 2nd February, should SACAA approve of the resolve measures implemented.
As an official date of flight reinstatement will be announced by SACAA, SAA apologised to passengers and customers for the inconvenience caused by the flight cancellation.
