The Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Malawi has pledged to continue facilitating direct investment inflow by Chinese firms into Malawi.

The council said this would, in turn also help address challenges of unemployment, especially among the youth in the country.

Council Chairman, Jiang Qing Xi, said this at Amitofo in Blantyre on Saturday during the commemoration of the 12th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malawi and China.

He said China would continue to play a role towards developing the Malawi economy.

“Ever since the first day of our council, we have made some progress in charity, improving life and the business environment for Chinese, especially in helping Chinese investors getting along with local communities and developing business opportunities,” he said.

He further said the council creates a platform for interaction between local and Chinese investors.

Councillor Gertrude Chirambo, who represented the Mayor of Blantyre City Council at the event, hailed the Malawi-China pact, saying it has helped in business and trade promotion.

She said Blantyre City Council has for instance been a direct beneficiary of the diplomatic relations between the two nations through several donations made towards the education and health sectors.

“Some development activities and businesses we see in Blantyre and Malawi at large are a result of the pact between the two nations. We anticipate that more investments would continue to flow,” Chirambo said.

During the day, the Chinese government donated various items valued at K3 million to Amitofo.
