During demonstrations against the Malawi Revenue Authority in Chitipa, Chipiku Store has been looted, as demonstrators were seen running with various items from the store.
On January 6th, Chitipa residents wrote to the Officer In-Charge of MRA in Chitipa, demanding the removal of officers from Mbilima Border post; “or we will react in a manner you will not like” said the letter.
The residents felt that the revenue collected from the border posts does not develop the district in anyway, hence they saw no need for the border post nor the officials. The letter, dated 2 January, gave MRA to do as demanded in the letter.
Similar to Chipiku, many businesses have suffered at the expense of demonstrations, after property was destroyed and items were looted.
