The Special Law Commission has outlined its revised points towards the Citizenship Act of 1966. The commission has reviewed the Act and the proposed new bill will be submitted to the Justice and Constitutional Affairs Ministry.
“The Act does not correspond with the rights and freedoms enshrined in the 1994 Republic of Malawi Constitution” said Reverend Fanuel Manganani, one of the commissioners, giving an example of how a Malawian woman loses her citizenship when she marries a foreigner. “All that has to change” insisted Manganani.
The Special Law Commission had a workshop, where the reviewed Act was discussed, with MDF and CSOs being the audience to the proposed new Act. This new Act will be submitted to the Justice and Constitutional Affairs Ministry for approval in February 2020.
