The construction of Kam’mwamba Coal Fired Electricity Generation Plant may not be financed, following environmental concerns by stakeholders who insist that coal powered electricity pollutes the environment.
Speaking amidst the parliamentary cluster committee of Agriculture and Natural Resources to Phombeya Power Substation, the Principal Secretary for Energy Patrick Matanda outlined that nowadays people prefer environmental friendly energy. “It is not a secret that now people are looking for environmental friendly energy and coal is not one of them. Government handed over the project to Egenco last year but it is getting difficult to get financing partners for the project because of that,” he said.
Meanwhile, as the contract for use of diesel generators from Aggreko Africa ends next year, the government has stated that it will not renew the contract.
