Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has sued 16 village heads and people living around Msiro waste site for allegedly damaging the facility.
According to The Nation newspaper, in civil cause number 52 of 2020 filed in the High Court of Malawi in Mzuzu Registry, the council seeks possession and control of the facility, damages and costs of trespassing and destruction of property and an injunction restraining defendants from locking out the council or stopping them from using the facility.
Mzuzu has been struggling in regards to waste management. Weeks ago, a press briefing organised by the Mzuzu City Council (MCC) outlined that the city’s sanitation was at its worst since there has been no dumping site after the closure of Silo dumping site months ago.
The Mayor of the city, Brian Kondwani Nyasulu, explained that the temporal resolve is to reopen the closed facility which may worsen the situation. On the other hand, he disclosed that an alternate site was found. “We managed to find another place at Choma but it is not on good environment” said Nyasulu.
