Crossborder traders have been warned against Police officers who are charging customs duty on their imported goods, as the The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma outlined that no police officer is mandated to charge duty.
The above was announced during a workshop on Monday in Blantyre, organised to educate Crossborder Traders Association of Malawi (Ctam) members on procedures and processes of clearing goods. “We noted with concern that some police officers charge duty on imported goods at the borders and traders fall prey to that.” said Kapoloma, urging Ctam members to report the officers to the MRA.
The Ctam members were told that while MRA works hand-in-hand with the police, it is strictly for the provision of security and that alone. Similar workshops took place in Karonga, Mzuzu, Mchinji, Lilongwe, Salima, Kasungu and Mangochi. Ctam president Esther Tchukambiri hailed the workshops as an eye-opener.
