Malawian imports passing through Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania will not be as expensive, as the operationalisation of Mbeya Dry Port in that Tanzania by the Malawi Cargo Centre Limited (MCCL).

MCCL–Dar es Salam logistics manager Gerald Ndowera confirmed to The Nation MCCL Dar es Salaam Corridor concept was designed to have the cargo moved from MCCL Dar es Salaam to Mbeya Dry Port by Tazara Railways and, thereafter, delivery to various points into Malawi by road.

The development will also see the ease distance from Songwe on the border between Malawi and Tanzania, to Dar es Salaam Port. It is 120 kilometres (km) from Songwe to Mbeya, while a 1000 km is covered from Songwe to Dar es Salaam.

Men Imports in Malawi increased to 155423.50 MWK Million in February from 134453.30 MWK Million in January of 2018. Imports in Malawi averaged 40378.44 MWK Million from 2000 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 187822.20 MWK Million in July of 2016 and a record low of 1055.70 MWK Million in April of 2001.
