The Industrial Relations Court (IRC) in Mzuzu has ordered Mzuzu University (Mzuni) to pay 12 Mzuni FC players K32 310 000 for breach of contract. The court’s registrar Lawrence Mtchera delivered the judgement after the players took the public university to court in April this year following an announcement by the institution that it had withdrawn its support to the team which joined the country’s elite league in 2005.
The court has ordered Sheriffs to impound assets at the university to recover the amount. However, Mzuni registrar James Kwilimbe said the university is not the respondent in the case, telling The Nation newspaper that the university stopped sponsoring the team a long time ago but somehow is still being associated with the team’s affairs.
