Illovo Sugar Malawi’s Managing Director, Lekani Katandula, said that the coronavirus pandemic has crippled people’s buying power, hence sugar sales have dropped in recent weeks.
Katandula outlined that since a state of national disaster was declared in the country, there is a notable drop in local sales from a ran rate of around 3200 tons per week to around 2500 tons per week.
The above was outlined as Illovo Sugar Malawi donated medical equipment worth over K9 million to Kameza Quarantine and Isolation Centre in Blantyre, to support the facility’s capacity in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. Katandula told reporters that the company was implementing measures to meet targeted sales during the year to dodge catastrophic losses.
