Representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have penned the parliament to call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Anti Corruption Bureau, Reyneck Matemba, to query on various investigations.
Among other investigations that the CSOs have resounded the query on the procurement contract for ambulances at the Ministry of Health (MoH), advertised in local newspapers on February 3 and closed on March 17 this year. The petition signed by Billy Banda, Philip Kamangira, Unandi Banda and Luther Mambala, has called for an update on where the bureau is in regards to investigating former president Peter Mutharika, on his involvement in the cement saga.
The petition was received by Legal Affairs Committee member Bester Awali, who will deliver it to Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara for the necessary way forward. On the other hand, the CSOs have called on parliament to probe the K7.6 billion legal fees awarded by the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal to Vice-President Saulos Chilima and President Lazarus Chakwera’s lawyers in the presidential elections case this year. Matemba is quoted to have promised to act on corrupt officials; speaking to Zodiak Broadcasting Station, he warned that there will be a crackdown and arrests of corrupt officers. “We have a law which we follow when carrying out duties. If someone broke the law, stealing public money and property, they should not expect that the ACB, Police or Financial Intelligence Authority or MRA will spare them because they are politicians. We won’t,” Matemba warned.
