Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) initially projected that Malawi’s economic growth in 2019 will be in at 5%, but has reviewed the projection to 4.9%, citing Cyclone Idai.
According to Nico Asset Managers Monthly Economic Report for July 2019, Cyclone Idai impact is estimated to have resulted in production losses amounting to $9.96 million (about K7.3 billion), equivalent to 0.13% of gross domestic product (GDP).
The report continues say that the impact was seen in losses in the sectors namely agriculture, construction, electricity and water, wholesale and retail trade, transport and accommodation and food services.
The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) June Financial Stability Report indicated that domestic economic growth was estimated to increase to 5% in 2019 from 4.1% in 2018.
