The Government has renewed a contract with Aggreko Power Solutions Limited, as the agreement had expired in January 2020. According to the Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Bintony Kutsaira, the one year contract will see Aggrekko leasing 84 generators with capacity to produce 76 megawatts of electricity.
Last year in December, during a tour at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) premises in Blantyre, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Binton Kutsaila, said that government has not yet decided on the renewal of a contract. It was reported that the renewal was rejected by Parliament, consumers and energy experts, who found the gensets to be pricey.
However, Kutsaira justified the resolve to renew the contract, saying it is better to give Malawians diesel powered electricity rather than none.
