Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has signed a contract with NR Electric Company of China agreeing that the latter will design, supply, install and commission 1.3 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power on Likoma and Chizumulu islands.
Speaking during the signing in Blantyre on Monday, Egenco’s chief executive officer William Liabunya said the contractor will soon start mobilising equipment to start the works, as NR Electric Company sales manager for Africa David Tu confirmed that NR will commence the project in two weeks from the day of signing the contract.
The development follows after Egenco and Escom signed 14 power purchase agreements (PPAs) with four independent power producers (IPPs) that will improve the power grid as currently, electricity demand hovers between 360MW and 460MW while supply has been hovering around 360MW. In April 2019, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi also signed 5 agreements between Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi and Electricidade De Mocambique (E. P. EDM).
