Reserve Bank of Malawi’s Governor, Dalitso Kazembe has said Malawians need to embrace digital payment systems and move on from a cash mentality.
Justifying his statement by referring to K12bn spent on renewing banknotes, Kazembe said RBM looks forward to a time when not a single tambala will be spent on damaged banknotes.
Digital payment systems would be a very welcome development, if Malawians were not going through network problems with the already established digital payment systems. Queues of frustrated citizens fill up shops as they can not purchase their electricity units due to network failure. The call for a non-cash economy calls for advanced networks, including security from hackers as well.
