Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) has said the government should consider compensating employees from pension funds and suspend Pay As You Earn (Paye) tax in the event of a lockdown.
The request follows after the above was implemented for the Malawi Tourism Council, though the development will be in effect as long as the pandemic is ongoing. A statement signed by Ecam Chief Executive Officer, George Khaki, proposes that the government should constantly engage the private sector before announcing measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus to preserve economic gains registered in recent years.
Meanwhile, Blantyre City Council has banned, with immediate effect, all large gatherings including street vending, weddings, parties, and other social gatherings, while minibuses have been directed to carry 2 passengers per seat.
