Minister of Energy Newton Kambala has stopped Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) from relying on hired vehicles, as it has been revealed that the parastatal spends K250 million per month on 138 hired vehicles.
“I instructed Escom to stop hiring all the vehicles and that has stopped as I am talking now.” said Kambala. Upon his appointment to the office, the minister took Escom Management to task on alleged misuse of resources, including fuel, as the company revealed that it was in a K40 billion debt.
“There is a lot of loss of money at ESCOM due to corruption as we have all read in the media,” said Kambala when touring Chichiri Power Station in July, “The current government is not ready to just watch people steal money from public institutions,”
