During a tour at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) in Blantyre, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Binton Kutsaila, said that government has not yet decided on the renewal of a contract for use of diesel generators from South Africa-based energy company, Aggreko.
This comes at least four months before expiry date of the contract. The contract, which will expire in four months, entails that the generators at Chichiri in Blantyre and Kanengo in Lilongwe ends in January while the one for generators in Kasungu ends between June and July 2019.
In 2017, Escom leased 84 gensets from Aggreko, which are required to be producing 78 megawatts for six hours each day. during a visit to Egenco diesel-powered generators at Mapanga in Blantyre and weed management plant at Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde, Machinga.
In July, government revelaed that it is amidst implementing sustainability measures for power generation, as Kutsaira visited Egenco diesel-powered generators at Mapanga in Blantyre and weed management plant at Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde, Machinga. Kutsaura hailed the as efforts to increase power supply as the latest generators run for nine hours a day. “We mandated Egenco to use any means necessary to generate power,” he said.
Egenco chief executive officer William Liabunya also praised the modern equipment, saying that it has improved power generation and supply. “We produce power without any interruption as the barrage has new and big automated gates that have eradicated human error,” he said.
