The Northern Region ex-miners association has bemoaned a 4 year delay on receiving their payment dues. Enraged, the ex-miners have threatened to hold demonstrations if the government does not respond to their 30-day ultimatum.
The association’s secretary, Winister Lubanda, outlined that the miners, who worked in South African mines under Temporary Employment Bureau of Africa (Teba) and Wenela, the South African government promised them the money, also for miners that passed on would receive through relations.
Last year, it was announced that the workers would receive a compensation of R18 million (about K1billion). According to figures from the Ministry of Labour, Youth and Manpower Development, a minimum of 60,000 Malawian ex-miners are eligible claimants. Moving forward, the Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Ken Kandodo, has said he will meet with the association.
