As the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) intensifies border patrol and inspections, a statement has been released concerning the regulations on imports and exports.
The Control of Goods act states that the following items are to be granted a permit before they are exported from Malawi;
Arms and Ammunition
Items used in production of the above require an export, permit,including the metals stated below;
Beryllium, Cobalt, Tantalum, Uranium, Lithium, Columbite, Niobium/Columbium, Thorium, Germanium, Titanium and nickel, also including any materials that may contain these metals.
Gemstones
The following, if in non-manufactured, require an export permit;
Corondum, Garnet, Quartz, Tourmaline, Turquoise, Beryl, Zircon, Jade, Olivine, Feldspar, Topaz, Opal, Chrysoberyl, Spinel and Lazurite.
Animal Husbandry products
Processed and unprocessed Hides and Skins, live poultry and day old-chicks.
Rice and Maize products
Rice, Rice Meals, Rice bran, Rice residues, dried maize on/off the cob, crushed maize, samp, maize grits, maize cones, hominy chop, maize offals and processed maize meals with/without additives.
Assorted items
Petroleum products, scrap metal and raw hard round wood timbers
Likewise, the following items require an import permit before entry into Malawi.
Cooking supplements
Refined cooking oil, fresh milk, Sugar and Salt
Grain
Grain of any variety including Rice, Barley, Beans and Groundnuts in all forms including meals, flours and residues.
Animal Husbandry Products and Maize (see in Exports list)
Fruits and vegetables
Bananas, tomatoes, all citrus fruits, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, rape, turnips, fresh beans/peas, green pepper, fresh chillies, onions, carrots, beetroot, radishes, tomatoes, egg plants and oranges.
Alcoholic and household products
Canned, glassed and bottled non-alcoholic drinks, laundry bar soap, matches and liquor in sachets.
Assorted items
Live fish including eggs and spawn, cement, sorghum including meals and malt, all types of processed or non-processed potatoes in other forms.
