Concerning news circulating online claiming that the Bank has been hacked and customer data has been compromised, FDH Bank has assured the general public that it has not been hacked and customer data has not been compromised in any way.
In a statement released the bank’s management, the bank has explained that on 13 November 2019, a group calling itself Shadow Kill contacted the Bank through an anonymous email with claims that the group had breached FDH Bank security protocols.
The statement reads “That email contained an extract
of information the group claimed to have extracted from FDH Bank. The attachment contained random computer commands, some staff email addresses and some mobile phone numbers”
The statement continues to say that Shadow Kill warned that they will release such information to the general public unless the Bank pays millions of kwachas through 4 Bitcoins.
However, FDH Bank immediately noted that the information shared was historical and meaningless. According to the statement, the information that the purported group shared is likely to be information collected by a former disgruntled employee in a misguided attempt to smear the organization.
Deliberately continuing to engage with the purported group to see if there was really a breach, the Bank concluded that no breach had occurred and indeed the information shared and random commands were meaningless. On the other hand, a comprehensive assessment of FDH Bank systems was conducted, showing that there was no security breach.
The Bank concludes that Shadow Kill as other groups that have targeted organizations like Google, Facebook and Apple in recent times. FDH Bank would also like to bring to the attention of the public that as a pioneer digital bank in Malawi, it is expected to be a target of malicious groups seeking easy money, fame and attention such as Shadow Kill.
