In January 2018, Skyband launched Metro Fibre. Compared to wired cables, fiber optic cables provide higher bandwidth and can transmit data over longer distances. Fiber optic cables support much of the world’s internet, cable television, and telephone systems. Following up on the current progress since the launch, Bizmalawi sat down with Chawanangwa Mphande, Skyband’s brand marketing officer.
“Since people’s bandwidth requirements are increasing and fibre meeting their needs, people have responded positively since the launch” she said. During the official launch in January, Skyband’s Managing Director, David Pinto, talked about fibre providing a speed of up to 20mbps, reaching a 100mbps maximum.
Commenting on problems faced during skyband fibre’s 11 months in action, Mphande says “The only constraint is that is a phased process; people have to wait until installation phases are complete”
Whilst Blantyre and Lilongwe residents await completion of the 8 phases, they are signing up for this faster internet experience. Being in a business era that is mostly relying on the internet, fibre is definitely a game changer.
