While engaging chiefs under M’mbelwa District Council in Mzimba, the Minister of Forestry and Natural Resources Nancy Tembo called on stakeholders and traditional leaders to help in  naming and shaming charcoal kingpins as one way of protecting forests in the country.

“We know there is more that goes on behind the scenes.” said the minister, “Let us join hands and track those warlords behind this charcoal business and let their identities come in the open.”

On the other hand, she urged traditional leaders to apply by-laws formulated by communities to protect forests in their areas. Tembo also called for Chiefs participation in fighting the crime, as they have the power to control their communities by enforcing laws.

Meanwhile, the government has amended the Forestry Act and it is operational. Once one is found in possession of charcoal or firewood, their vehicles will be confisticated.
