Following a strike by fuel tanker drivers who are demanding a salary increase, Escom has announced that its power diesel generators may not be able to generate power, should the tankers not be allowed to pass to deliver the diesel to the generators.
According to a statement by the firm, a massive load shedding schedule will occur, if the trucks do not make it to the generators. The news follows another challenge that the energy supplier is facing, saying that Shire River has registered lower levels of water, hence negatively affecting the hydropower stations.
However, during a tour at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) in August, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Binton Kutsaila, said that government has not yet decided on the renewal of a contract for the use of diesel generators from South Africa-based energy company, Aggreko.
