The Food and Agriculture Organisation (Fao) has said, in its Global Information and Early Warning System report, that the outlook in crop production next year looks positive, owing to favourable rains that have started in most parts of Malawi.
According to the report, conducive weather conditions have resulted in adequate soil moisture levels, which supported planting operations and early crop development. Hopefully the harvests will be as impressive as last year’s, having Malawi’s maize output increased by over 24% in the 2018/19 farming year, from 2.697 million metric tones in the 2017/18 farming season to 3.355 million metric tones.
The report says that as for December 2019 to March 2010 period, seasonal weather forecasts point to an increased probability of average to above-average precipitation across the country, raising the likelihood of a second consecutive above-average cereal output in 2020.
