Stakeholders in Industry are still using thin plastics, despite the Supreme Court’s order for the government to implement the ban. In response, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining has developed a strategy guiding enforcement of a ban on thin plastics in the country.

The disobedience to the ban follows as industry players claimed that they were not properly consulted on the implications of the ban. Moving forward, Director of Environmental Affairs, Taonga Mbale, said the government drafted a strategy to ensure that the ban is more effective.

According to Mbale, the strategy intends to sensitise communities to the ban of thin plastics and use of environmentally friendly alternative products.

Initially, the government planned to enforce the ban on manufacturing and using thin plastics in 2015 but the decision was challenged in court by some local plastic manufacturing companies, also arguing that the ban would negatively affect their businesses.
