Minister of Labour Ken Kandodo has warned that immigrants working in firms without permits will be deported, as the law states that no person shall enter, be or remain in Malawi unless he is in possession of a current permanent residence permit or a current temporary residence permit.
Kandodo said it was sad that jobs that could best be handled by locals were offered to immigrants with no permits. On the other hand, Kandodo confirmed that the Ministry of Homeland Security will intensify inspections. “…we will pounce on a company and demand to see Temporary Employment Permit for any foreign worker,” Kandodo said.
Last year, the Ministry of Homeland Security arrested more than 70 foreigners for working without permits. Meanwhile, as the Tonse Alliance administration aims to provide 1 million jobs per year to combat unemployment in the country, it will review the issuance of Temporary Employment Permits to foreign workers and nationals in order to give a chance to locals.
