Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has banned the sale of green maize in the city as a statement on Tuesday signed by Assistant Director of Health and Social Services shows that the ban began on 16th March
In the statement, the Director of Health and Social Services Mavuto Lupwayi, attributed the ban to sections 6 and 24 of the Local Government Act of 1989. In Blantyre, the maize ban was implemented on February 26th, as Blantyre City Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Alfred Chanza, appealed to all the green maize vendors to strictly observe this ban. “Anyone found selling green maize will be prosecuted,” emphasized a statement by Blantyre City Council.
As of norm, every year during the green maize season, councils ban the sale of the commodity, with the aim of reducing theft of green maize in maize fields in the city.
