According to the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) high taxes and the poor state of infrastructure are negatively affecting investment initiatives in the tourism industry.
MTC board member Shiraz Waka said the above is making service delivery more expensive compared to neighboring countries. Unfortunately the realization was made as Malawi has been getting worldwide recognition in the last two years; last year travellemmings, a website dedicated to promoting the world’s emerging destinations, rated Malawi as the number one destination in Africa. This follows another travelers guide called Rough Guides in 2018, in which Malawi was ranked third out of eighteen, in a list of ‘places to keep on your radar in 2018’.
However, Waka looked up to the coming of the planned Malawi Tourism Authority, to work on the concerns will be addressed adequately for the growth of the sector. Last year, the Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture says it is in the process of formulating the Malawi Tourism Authority. The (former) Minister responsible, Kondwani Nankhumwa said the body will ensure that money which holiday makers paid to tourism operators that sell Malawi abroad is brought to the country.
