Cyclone Idai affected southern areas of Malawi, especially areas that share boundaries with Mozambique. The cyclone’s impact towards theses areas was immense as heavy winds, rains and floods, left families displaced, rushing to camps for shelter. Shree Hindu Seva Mandal in Blantyre has rolled out a program to send relief to the affected areas, and Biznwesspoke to the donations coordinator, D. P. Lakhani.
Coming from recently donating in Phalombe, the grouping sent relief to Nchalo, where relief worth K15 million was sent. “1200 families were given relief packs” says Lakhani, “..one relief pack consists of a 30 Liter plastic bucket, Maize Flour, Beans, Rice, Salt, Plastic sheeting, enamel plates/basins and a hurricane lamp among other items”
Lakhani revealed future plans to send more relief to Malawian brothers and sisters who have been affected. He stressed that Shree Hindu Seva Mandal is keen on reaching out to regions that are further south, which have not been yet approached. “There are regions that inaccessible due to destruction of roads; areas like Mapanga and Sawala. Regardless, we will make effort to reach out to these areas and send relief there”
Overall, Lakhani was pleased with the current progress made, as he emphasized that a lot more needs to be done. “The members in our community have made more pledges towards this cause” he said.
