The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has reported 3 companies to the Malawi Revenue Authority, calling for a tax evasion probe.
The HRDC letter signed by the coalition’s Chairperson Gift Trapence has reported Mapeto DWSM (David White Head and Sons), Siku Transport and Karim Rido Electronics, for importing finished products while declaring them as raw materials. The letter also outlines allegations that Siku Transport has unsettled taxes amounting to K2 billion. “…Since 2014 there were some MRA officers allegedly who covered these unpaid bills. HRDC and the people of Malawi are thus requesting your office to look into these matters” reads part of the letter.
Last month, the Maravi Asian Development Association (MADA) recently registered concerns and complaints from the Business Community regarding the MRA’s “Kuiphula ndi Lisiti Langa” campaign which has seen cash rewards for reporting traders who are not issuing EFD Receipts. MADA, as a duly registered membership-based organisation that represents minority businesses, raised the complaints and concerns to MRA, that (in some instances) traders actually issued EFD receipts but the buyer did not take it.
